Statement from CreateTO Board Chair Dino Chiesa on the Housing Now Initiative
Earlier today, Mayor John Tory announced the Housing Now initiative.
As a key priority, the Mayor is seeking to better leverage the City’s real estate portfolio and planning policies to deliver affordable housing solutions across Toronto.
Working in partnership with City Planning and the Affordable Housing Office, CreateTO has identified 11 City-owned properties with high potential for mixed-use, mixed-income development with significant rental and affordable components. Together with City staff, our team is working to develop a plan to appropriately fast track and maximize market and affordable rental housing at each of these development locations.
These properties will offer the opportunity to engage the private, non-profit and public sectors to deliver creative solutions to balance affordability, transit accessibility and economic development in City neighborhoods.
CreateTO, as an agency of the City, will be making this a priority and we look forward to working with the Mayor, Council and City staff to advance this initiative.
