    Canada invests in new rental housing units in Toronto

    Solving Canada's housing crisis requires immediate action to build up supply and bring down costs. The Government of Canada is stepping up with unprecedented investments to supercharge housing construction across Canada. To that end, the federal government launched Build Canada Homes, a new federal agency that will build affordable housing at scale, including transitional and supportive housing, deeply affordable and community housing, and affordable homes for the Canadian middle class.
  • Today, Mayor Olivia Chow, Jennifer McKelvie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Member of Parliament for Ajax, The Honourable Bill Blair, Member of Parliament for Scarborough Southwest, Councillor Parthi Kandavel (Scarborough Southwest) and City of Toronto staff celebrated the start of major construction of a new mixed-use, transit-oriented community in Scarborough Southwest. This development, on City-owned land adjacent to Victoria Park Station, will deliver a total of 705 new purpose-built rental homes including 256 affordable rental homes.
  • Today, Mayor Olivia Chow, Deputy Mayor Amber Morley (Etobicoke-Lakeshore), CreateTO and City of Toronto staff celebrated the progress made on the new mixed-use, transit-oriented community that will redefine Etobicoke at Bloor-Kipling.
  • In one of its latest affordable housing ventures, CreateTO has filed plans for a 41- and six-storey rental development that would transform a City-owned parking lot in Toronto's Fairbank neighbourhood, at 9 Shortt Street. The project would deliver at-grade commercial space and 458 rental units, including around 140 affordable homes, within walking distance of an Eglinton Crosstown LRT station.
