Toronto celebrates reopening of Amsterdam Bridge at Harbourfront Centre

CreateTO is proud to announce the official reopening of the Amsterdam Bridge, an important pedestrian connection point in the heart of Toronto’s central waterfront.
Originally gifted to the City of Toronto by the Mayor of Amsterdam in 1974 to commemorate the designation of Toronto and Amsterdam as twin cities, the steel cable footbridge has long served as a symbol of international friendship and an iconic feature of Harbourfront Centre’s campus.
Closed in 2021 due to structural disrepair, the bridge has undergone a comprehensive rehabilitation led by CreateTO on behalf of the City of Toronto, in partnership with Harbourfront Centre, and is now once again open.
“CreateTO continues to deliver city-building projects that connect communities and bring Toronto’s waterfront to life,” said CreateTO CEO Vic Gupta. “On behalf of the City of Toronto, our team worked with Harbourfront Centre and Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik to complete this project on time for a busy summer on the lake, including the global spotlight that will soon shine on our city.”
The reopening event, which was attended by Mayor Olivia Chow, Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik, Dutch Consul General in Toronto Marjan Schippers, Harbourfront Centre Board Chair Tenio Evangelista, and hundreds of community members and local business representatives, arrives as Toronto prepares to welcome thousands of guests from around the world for the FIFA World Cup 2026TM. The restored bridge enhances accessibility and connectivity across the waterfront, linking visitors to Harbourfront Centre’s campus for the arts, culture, learning and recreation.
The rehabilitation project was made possible through a collaborative funding model supported primarily by Spadina-Fort York community benefit reserves, as well as funding from the City’s Planning division, the City’s Economic Development and Culture division and Harbourfront Centre.
CreateTO led all facets of the project’s delivery, including the initial condition assessment, design, competitive tendering, and construction administration, ensuring the bridge meets modern safety standards while preserving its distinctive design. CreateTO worked closely with Doug Dixon & Associates — a local structural engineering practice with extensive experience on many of Toronto's iconic bridge structures — whose technical expertise supported the bridge's assessment and rehabilitation.
As Toronto continues to grow and welcome visitors from around the world, the restored Amsterdam Bridge stands as a renewed link between communities and culture, supporting a vibrant and connected waterfront.
